What to do in Tepoztlan?
TEPOZTLAN: monumental nature, living heritage and a calm that can be felt.
Nestled in northern Morelos, Tepoztlan is a destination of nature and character: tranquil streets, warm light, and a landscape that effortlessly commands attention. Just minutes away, El Tepozteco National Park offers panoramic views and hiking trails among impressive geological formations; high above, the Tepozteco Archaeological Zone crowns the mountain range with a sweeping vista of the valley.
For those who appreciate a more leisurely cultural experience, Tepoztlan is also part of the Route of the First Monasteries of the 16th Century. A legacy of this is the Ex-Convent of the Nativity (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a historical gem in the surrounding area.
Tepoztlan Gastronomy
Today, Tepoztlan boasts a number of chefs who celebrate organic ingredients. Signature cuisine, sustainability, fusion, organic, artisanal pride, “from the land to the table,” and “ancestral pride” are increasingly common phrases in the gastronomy of this magical town.
As early as 2026, the Mexico Gastronomic Guide (which recognizes the 250 best restaurants in the country) featured two restaurants in Tepoztlan: Mesa de Origen and Parcela Restaurante. The former was recognized for its haute cuisine and ambiance, while the latter was praised for its signature cuisine and natural setting.
While the guide highlights these two restaurants, the town offers a wide variety of culinary options that celebrate Mexican cuisine and deserve to be discovered.
The truth is that, despite these new offerings, the traditional cuisine that characterizes the region is always present and will continue to be, with its classic itacates (corn gorditas with lard and cheese), Yecapixtla-style dried beef, armored tacos, chicatana salsa (made with seasonal giant ants), colorín cakes (tzompantli), and a wide variety of pre-Hispanic (vegan) dishes.
To savor these delicacies freshly prepared by local cooks, the Tepoztlan Municipal Market is a must-visit. It’s the ideal place to try these dishes, many of them accompanied by freshly made nixtamalized corn tortillas. And to complete the experience, there’s the spectacular view it offers.
Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art Carlos Pellicer Collection
An intimate museum in the heart of Tepoztlan houses the pre-Hispanic collection donated by the poet and museographer Carlos Pellicer. The curation is clear and serene: pieces from diverse cultural traditions (such as Olmec, Maya, Zapotec, and Totonac) converse in a brief tour, ideal for a cultural break before or after visiting the market and the town center. Among its most cited works is a piece linked to Ometochtli Tepoztecatl, associated with the imagery of Tepozteco Hill.
“90 minutes from Mexico City”
The perfect getaway from Mexico City: close, accessible, and completely different.
Tepoztlan
Tepoztlan is imbued with a very special energy, but beyond the mysticism that surrounds it, there’s a charm in the mix of sensations that manifest through the senses: the colors of the facades contrasting with the adobe walls; the diversity of handicrafts showcasing the creativity of the artisans; the aroma of atole, the fillings for quesadillas or itacate, pancita, or simply freshly made tortillas.
Each season has a color that stands out: the pink of the guayacan tree, the purple of the jacaranda, the orange of the tabachin and the Indian tulip, and, of course, the bougainvillea in its diverse colors.
And as a backdrop to all this color are the mountains. No matter how many times you look up, the silhouette of Tepozteco always manages to amaze you. Walking up through its streets is to discover how the mountains embrace the town, gifting us with postcards where the mysticism of the air merges into a single breath.
