The essence of calm, for its ability to quiet the spirit. Its bluish spikes, dancing with the slightest breeze, teach us that true strength lies in softness and that the greatest luxury of our time is simply being able to breathe deeply. It is a plant that prefers poor soil, relentless sun, and dry wind. It does not ask to be pampered; it asks for freedom.

In our culture, lavender is the balm of the soul. It is the plant that was placed under the pillow to ward off nightmares and added to bathwater to cleanse away sorrows after a long day of work under the sun.

Although today we inevitably associate it with the fields of French Provence or with rustic Mexican gardens, lavender has a Mediterranean origin and a history that dates back thousands of years. It is a plant born among stone and sun.

It is native to the dry, mountainous areas of the western Mediterranean โ€” Spain, Italy, and France โ€” as well as North Africa. That is why it is such a rustic plant: it evolved to survive in poor soils, with little water and abundant sun.

Its name comes from the Latin lavare, meaning โ€œto wash.โ€ The ancient Romans were the ones who truly made it famous. They used it in their renowned public baths to perfume the water and for its antiseptic properties. For them, lavender was a symbol of purity and hygiene.

The Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, lavender moved into the monasteries. Monks cultivated it in their medicinal gardens. At a time when the smells of cities were difficult to bear, lavender became a shield: it was scattered across the floors of castles and churches so that, when stepped on, it would release its aroma and cleanse the air of disease.

It arrived on our continent with the Spanish. It adapted beautifully to the high, dry regions of Mexico because the climate reminded it of its Mediterranean home. Here, it became part of our traditional herbal medicine, blending with Indigenous knowledge to treat fright, calm the nerves, and perfume trunks of freshly laundered clothing.

Near the pool / Garden view

Native to the wilds of South Africa, the Bird of Paradise is proof that nature can also be an avant-garde artist. It’s not a flower that simply “opens”; it’s a flower that “takes flight.” Its vibrant orange and deep blue colors mimic the plumage of the most exotic birds, as if a bird had perched on a stem and decided to stay there forever, guarding the garden.
